Dear Cafe Con Leche Family,

A member of the community needs our help. On May 2, 2016 Martín Esquivel-Hernandez was taken from his home and detained by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) the day after marching at an immigrant rights rally with his family. He is currently being held in a private prison in Youngstown, Ohio and faces the threat of deportation.

Martín came to the United States with his wife, Alma, and their three children in 2012 to build a better life free from the gang violence that plagued their neighborhood in Mexico City. Martín and Alma settled down in Pittsburgh and quickly became cherished members of the community. They are active with two local churches and Martín has been involved with many community initiatives, including the Latino Parents Council, A+ Schools Community Alliance for Public Education, and the Latino Needs Assessment Project along with Alma.

While U.S. Attorney David Hickton’s office has refused to answer questions about why they have chosen to detain and prosecute Martín, community members believe that Hickton is using lack of a driver’s license to paint Esquivel as a criminal deserving of jail time and deportation.

We are outraged by this case and are calling on our community to stand up for Martín so he can be reunited with his family. Please consider what you can do to support:

At Café con Leche we care deeply about Pittsburgh’s Latino community. We want to see Latinos flourish and thrive here, not be intimidated and criminalized. Help us build a community that is inclusive and welcoming of all Latinos by standing up for Martín and his family.

Seguimos juntos,

The Café con Leche Team

Querida familia,

Seguimos juntos,
Café con Leche
